MY VINTAGE 1986 COMPILATION

In the early to mid 1980s I was in Melbourne band Strange Silence. The local industry at the time was frustratingly hostile to electronic bands, especially live, but we persevered doing what we loved and gigged as often as opportunity permitted.

The songs I present on this compilation album were recorded in singer Stephen Beckett's lounge room floor on a hot Melbourne summer evening in1986; I remember it well. It's pretty much a live cassette performance of our set at the time.

Strange Silence was originally a 4 piece, on this recording we're reduced to 3: on vocals is Stephen Beckett; guitar: John Benevoli and myself on electronics & production.

For those so inclined....in this period I was using two Emax samplers (as you may have seen Alan Wilder demonstrate on Depeche's 101 documentary), a bunch of DX7 modules, the Yamaha RX11 drum machine and Yamaha QX1 sequencer (New Order).

I had just dispensed with the my Mirage sampler, Korg PolySix, Roland Juno 60, Roland SH101, Roland MC4 sequencer and lurking in cupboards were the Roland 909 & BOSS DR55 drums and the regularly failing Tascam 4 track Portastudio. I sometimes used to use the latter in rehearsals so I wouldn't need to transport and setup all my other gear. Nothing was as simple as a laptop and a controller as per our current day live setups.

Anyhow, if you're interested in what I was doing musically around this period then this album is a good example.
